Why do you need a credit card?
It's tough to get by if you don't have a major credit card. You don't have to carry plastic, but without a major credit card it will be a pain to shop by phone or online, rent a car - or even get some utilities or cable service without a large deposit. If you travel abroad, particularly in the USA, having no credit card can be a real problem. If you try to hire a car in California you will be told that "we don't take cash in California". Hmm...
Credit Rating
But there's another very good reason to have a major credit card - your credit report. A major credit card, paid on time over time is the strongest credit reference you'll ever have! For building good credit, it's even better than a mortgage or car loan.
But if you don't have a major credit card, that first one can be hard to get. And if you've had good credit, but lost it through bankruptcy or other financial problems, re-establishing great credit can be even more of a challenge.
